In Wake of Anonymous GoDaddy Hack DownForEveryoneOrJustMe Crumbles Under The Strain
Earlier today, a member of the hacker group Anonymous began a large-scale attack on the GoDaddy.com webhosting service which took down the company's website and wrought havoc on their customers. In the wake of this attack, a popular website outage confirmation tool has been crushed under the heavy demand.
The website, DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com aims to answer the simple question of whether or not a website is truly inaccessible. Users can enter a URL and the website will confirm whether the website is indeed down.
However, today's attack by Anonymous apparently left so many people wondering about the accessibility of websites that the service buckled under the load. Visiting the site now returns the error message: "This application is temporarily over its serving quota. Please try again later."
The attack on GoDaddy.com not only took down the company's website, but has also reportedly affected some of the company's customers as well. Some users apparently are unable to access their website, DNS service, email, and GoDaddy phone service as well.
Earlier today the Twitter user @AnonymousOwn3r claimed responsibility for the attack. Though another Anonymous Twitter account insinuated that the attack had been connected to GoDaddy's support of the controversial SOPA law, @AnonymousOwn3r seems to be more interested in the limelight. He or she has, on a few occasions, corrected journalists who attribute the attack to other members of the loose hacker collective.
Without DownForEveryoneOrJustMe, users concerned about their website's accessibility can use a different tool - such as http://www.checksite.us/. Interestingly, the outage of DownForEveryoneOrJustMe seems to have spilled over, as similar sites such as downornot.com have also gone over quota.
However, it may not be necessary for much longer. Not long ago, @AnonymousOwn3r hinted that the attack might soon be lifted and, as of writing, GoDaddy.com is once again accessible.
