Dad Who Wears Skirts: Disturbing or Endearing? [PHOTO/POLL]
When I first read the phrase "Dad who wears skirts: the in the trending yahoo news queue, I have to be honest: I wasn't sure if what I was about to read would be humor or deeply disturbing.
Indeed, upon seeing those 4 highly common yet rarely used together words pop up on my screen, I began to have visions from the old classic thriller Psycho flash before my eyes.
Also, just earlier this week I had discovered a ridiculously humorous video by German DJ Flula in which he was dared to wear a trash bag skirt into Starbucks and proceed to act normally, ordering a latte to go.
With all these preconceived notions in my mind, I clicked on the link. What I found was an interesting, yet sure to be controversial story, of a man, living in a small German town who has chosen to don a skirt as he heads out, with none other than, his 5 year old son, who is also wearing a favorite sundress.
It seems Nils Pickert's 5-year-old son enjoys wearing ladies clothing such as dresses, nail polish and other accessories often associated with the opposite sex,
The pair lives in a traditional German village, where the boy's choice in clothing have undergone a lot of scrutiny and received quite a bit of commentary and reaction. As a result of his personal flair the boy has found it difficult to make friends.
Wanting to support his son, even when the stakes are high Nils Pickert made a decision which could be life changing, both for he and his son.
He decided to begin wearing skirts also, showing his son that he supports the boy regardless of if his choices mesh with those of conventional standards.
In an interview with, EMMA a German magazine. Picker said "I didn't want to talk my son into not wearing dresses and skirts. He didn't make friends in doing that in Berlin already, and after a lot of contemplation, I had only one option left: To broaden my shoulders for my little buddy and dress in a skirt myself."
Pickert went on to say, "The day [after I wore a skirt] he fished out a dress from the depth of his wardrobe. At first only for the weekend. Later also for nursery-school."
It seems with the donning of the dress, Pickert's son has discovered a new found confidence and though initially did receive some heckling at school for his unusual choices in apparel, now Pickert says: "He's simply smiling, when other boys want to make fun of him and says: 'You only don't dare to wear skirts and dresses because your dads don't dare to either."
The story most definitely shows the lengths a father will go to let his son know that he is loved and appreciated, regardless of choices he makes in Iife. At this point, however, I'd like to play a devil's advocate here. You see, I can't help but wonder how the general public feels about this unusual display of support. Apart from the undeniable devotion aspect of the story, at what point should a parent draw the line in allowing their children to go against the status quo?How do we determine which peculiarities should be encouraged and which should we be discouraged?
Indeed, I would say my parents were highly supportive of all I ever desired to really do and be and, furthermore, believed in my abilities to the end. If they had not, I may have never had the courage to leave a status-quo job like teaching, and venture into the world of freelance writing.
Just out of curiosity, if this was your son, what would you have done? Support or Thwart?
