Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates will be rolling out to a number of HTC devices in North America. HTC One is getting the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update by the end of September, according to company president of global sales Jason Mackenzie. Mackenzie answered user questions on Twitter and told users that HTC intended to skip Android 4.2.2 and focus on getting out the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update.

Basically, it looks like the HTC One update is going to skip Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and go straight to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. This is true for all carriers and the developer version. The Droid DNA Android 4.3 update is also expected to be released by the end of September. HTC One X is currently getting the Android 4.2.2 Sense 5 update in Europe. The 380 MB HTC One X update makes a number of changes, "packing in features including lock screen widgets, home button customization (long press for menu, swipe up to launch Google Now), quick settings in the notification shade, advanced notifications, BlinkFeed, Video Highlights, a flatter UI and dozens of other Sense 5 specific enhancements."

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update isn't a full-scale overhaul. For that we will have to wait till Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. The HTC One X Android 4.2 update is currently only in about six countries in Europe. It has yet to reach Germany, France, Italy and the UK which is expected for next week. The HTC One X US version may not receive the Android 4.2.2 update till late this month. It does not appear that the HTC One X will be one of the devices that are skipping straight to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update largely includes things like tweaks to the camera UI and Bluetooth Low Energy, Open GL ES 3.0 gaming graphics and 4K video playback support. Knowyourmobile points out that it is difficult to see how it is possible for the HTC One to take advantage of these new Android 4.3 features because they are intended for the stock UI.

This is not the only recent development with HTC. The company has recently started an ad campaign called #HTChange and has signed Robert Downey Jr. as their global smartphone ambassador. This has led some to speculate that a next-gen HTC device is coming, perhaps a HTC One M8 in 2014. There is also the release of the HTC One Mini expected in August 23 and the HTC One Max phablet whose release date is still unknown.

Finally, in new HTC news, @evleaks has reported the HTC Zara, a smartphone that appears to be a black plastic version of the HTC One, "the HTC Zara will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5.5 UI, and offer a 4.5-inch qHD display and an 8-megapixel rear camera. Powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, the Zara should also feature 1GB RAM, microSD expansion, and a 2100mAh battery"

The new HTC device is an interesting looking device, though Android Guys advises us to be cautious. The specs are markedly different from those reported earlier. The phone reported by @evleaks appears to be mid-range while the earlier specs showed a similar device with a dual core 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 4.50inch qHD display, 8GB internal storage and 1GB RAM. The HTC Sense 5 UI was reported along with Android 4.2.2 possibly suggesting that the upcoming HTC devices have all been prepared for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update schedule for HTC is encouraging, but the company has messed up before. We will have to wait and see in September if a complete Android 4.3 Jelly Bean roll-out happens. It is also a question if lower-range HTC devices like the HTC One V will be getting the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. We don't think that's particularly likely.
